Automatic reviews

Choose whether HeyDeer reviews pull requests on its own, and how often. A new workspace starts with Manual only, and right after setup HeyDeer asks whether to switch to On every push. Until someone does, HeyDeer reviews only when someone requests a review.

Review schedule

ScheduleWhat happens
Manual only (default)HeyDeer reviews only when someone requests a review: from HeyDeer, in a PR comment, or with Review this revision on the check.
Once per PRHeyDeer reviews a matching pull request until one review succeeds.
On every pushHeyDeer reviews when the pull request first matches your filters, then after each push that adds commits.

Turn on automatic reviews

  1. Open Workspace settings → Review rules.
  2. Under When to review, choose Once per PR or On every push.
  3. Select Save workspace review rules.

To use a different schedule for one repository, change it in that repository’s Review rules. See How settings work.

Which pull requests qualify

A schedule applies only to pull requests that match your automatic review filters. By default, HeyDeer skips drafts, pull requests from forks, and dependency updates from bots such as Dependabot and Renovate. See Automatic review filters.

To stop automatic reviews on one pull request, comment @heydeer pause. See PR comment commands.

Once per PR

  • One successful review, automatic or requested, uses up Once per PR, even if it reports findings.
  • Failed and canceled reviews don’t count. Until one succeeds, a new push replaces the unfinished automatic review.
  • After that, pushes and reopening the pull request don’t start reviews. Comment @heydeer review to review it again.

On every push

New pushes replace unfinished automatic reviews with a review of the latest commit.

By default, reviews after the first look only at what changed since the last review. See Follow-up reviews.

Maximum automatic reviews per PR

With On every push, HeyDeer stops reviewing a pull request automatically after this many successful automatic reviews, including the first. The default is 5; you can choose 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20 or Unlimited.

Requested reviews count toward Once per PR but not toward this maximum, and you can still request them after it’s reached.

Stop automatic reviews when a PR closes

On by default. When a pull request is closed or merged, HeyDeer stops its queued and running automatic reviews. Reviews you requested yourself keep running.
